Tuesday, 19 December 2017 - 2 minute read & watch

For one month Belgian talk show host Lieven Van Gils asked all his guests to bring, sign and donate their favorite book. The books were collected in a beautiful bookcase that was put up for auction to support the Warmest Week*.

The winner? BBC, of course. But more importantly non-profit Leesweb and their invaluable project: de Boekenkaravaan.

As seen on TV

On his smartphone, during a marketing congress, with a last-minute offer of € 8080 – that’s how our Managing Partner Anton Loos won the auction. Anton accepted the bookcase himself on the popular Belgian TV show Van Gils & Gasten. Watch his performance here:

Reading is a human right

Why the bookcase, exactly? Because BBC appreciates fresh ideas, substantiated communication and equal opportunity for all.

De Boekenkaravaan is a project of non-profit Leesweb to help disadvantaged children read more and at a higher level. Approximately one hundred Leesweb volunteers regularly read books to children at their homes or in school. An additional goal is to stimulate parents to read more to their children themselves.

The BBC Library

Written communication is close to our hearts – that’s why the collection of books will get a central place in our office. A place where our colleagues are free to loan out a book for inspiration, entertainment or tranquility. Yihaa!

We’re already looking forward to these intriguing works of literature:

  • Never Let Me Go – Kazai Ishiguro (Ward Verrycken)
  • What is the What – Dave Eggers (Evelien Bosmans)
  • Stoner – John Williams (Mathias Sercu)
  • All the light we cannot see – Jonathan Doerr (John Porter)

*The Warmest Week is a yearly initiative by radio station Studio Brussels to encourage charity work and fund-raising just before Christmastime.
