BBC launches Against Cancer Day campaign

“A short message, a big gesture”

17 September 2009 is Against Cancer Day. BBC created the day’s complete campaign for the Flemish Association against Cancer (VLK). Its aim is to have as many people as possible write a personal support message for cancer patients and have people think about the patients’ fight against cancer.

Support matters

Every year 35.000 Flemings are diagnosed with cancer. Tens of thousands of patients in Flanders fight against the disease every day, supported by doctors, attendants, family, friends and colleagues. But very often it is a battle fought in silence. That is why VLK want to give patients extra support on Against Cancer Day.

Yellow ribbon
Professionals like doctors, attendants and pharmacists carry a yellow ribbon on Against Cancer Day, symbol of solidarity with cancer patients. VLK organises in hospitals group sessions and workshops, for patients’ family and friends too.

Every message matters
With the slogan “A short message, a big gesture” the campaign calls upon everyone to write a message of support for cancer patients. BBC created a multimedia campaign to reach as many people as possible.

Its backbone is the website,
www.dagtegenkanker.be, meant to inform everyone about the campaign with text and video testimonials. Visitors can write their personal message online or send one through their mobile. All messages are published on the website.

The campaign is supported by ads in local and national media, on radio, in newspapers and websites.
Companies can take part as well by publishing custom made banners on their websites.
